First, 1-MCP Revolutionized the Food Supply Chain

1-MCP revolutionized the apple industry by significantly extending the life of apples. For example, it turned Gala apples from a summer apple into something people enjoy year-round. It works by slowing the production of ethylene, the “aging signal” naturally emitted by produce as it ripens.

While the rapid-release formulation worked for apples, it wasn’t designed to meet the unique ripening rates of more sensitive commodities and their storage conditions. Its acute delivery can effectively shut down the ripening process of sensitive produce, leading to less marketable fruits and veggies.

Today, We’ve Utilized 1-MCP in a New Way, Optimizing It for More Produce

The key difference between HarvestHold® and typical 1-MCP products lies in our proprietary humidity-released formulation. As soon as the produce’s environmental humidity hits a critical threshold, our technology activates and gradually releases 1-MCP over time, steadily slowing the effects of ethylene.

This novel delivery system can be more effective than traditional, rapid-release 1-MCP formulations because it delivers a more optimal dose to curb the aging process without shutting it down. This helps produce retain its freshness and marketability.

Our ability to print a gas on a substrate allows HarvestHold Fresh to take the form of a simple sheet that’s an easy-to-use, in-box solution — not an in-room solution.
